What you need to bring:
• Sleeping bag (pillow if you want) • Waterproof shoes (Wellington boots) and trainers or other non-marking shoes • 3 complete changes of clothing – thermals if you have them, trousers, tee-shirt, long sleeve jumpers, fleeces etc. – more layers keep you warmer than one big woolly jumper! • Hat, gloves and neck towel • Underwear and socks (thick walking socks are good) • Sun hat, sunglasses and sun cream • Shore clothes – limited amount • Toiletries and towels – no aerosols please! • Swimming costume – many voyages include a visit to a leisure centre • Personal medication required e.g. inhaler • Personal belongings: glasses, camera, diary etc. • CDs – there is a CD player on board for the use of the crew • Pocket money – in addition to pocket money we suggest a contingency amount of £20 to be retained for shore based activities which may include the cinema, leisure centre and swimming etc.
Please do not bring:
• Suitcases • Torches • Electric games • Alcohol or drugs • Fizzy pop • Fireworks • Walkmans or music players with headsets • Alarm clocks
Mobile phones. We do not allow the use of mobile phones on board James Cook. They must be switched off at all times. Crew can use their mobile phones only when they are ashore but we do suggest they be left at home. It is possible to live for a week without them! In an emergency crew can be contacted via our shore-based office.
Overseas voyages. Additional requirements when overseas ports are to be visited (typically the Tall Ships voyages) must include your passport and it is recommended that Form E111 is obtained from the Post Office. This entitles the holder to free or reduced cost medical treatment in mainland Europe.
